Ronan McLaughlin: Burt deserved to retain their IFC status

Burt had held their own in the group stages of the IFC but still found themselves on the brink of dropping down to Junior A but a convincing win over Letterkenny Gaels has preserved their status

Ronan McLaughlin: Burt deserved to retain their IFC status

Burt go on the attack against Letterkenny Gaels

Burt will play Intermediate Championship football again next year after securing their status with Saturday evening’s relegation play-off final win over Letterkenny Gaels in Convoy.

Speaking after the 2-10 to 0-5 victory, Burt manager Ronan McLaughlin felt justice was done given that his team had run Intermediate finalists Termon and Naomh Columba close, along with Bundoran, in the group stages of the championship.

“Obviously we are delighted with the win and the fact we have retained our championship status again for next year,” he said.

“I think, in a way, justice has been done given the quality of the teams we played earlier in the championship.

“We had opportunities against Termon, we had opportunities against Bundoran to win both those games and we did not take them.

“Because of that we found ourselves playing for our place in the championship again next year.”

After losing to Gaeil Fhánada in the play-off semi-final it was back to the wall for McLaughlin and his team ahead of Saturday evening’s ‘do or die’ tie with Letterkenny Gaels.

“We were confident enough coming into the game. We had played them in the league and we knew if we played the football we are capable of playing, we would win.

“For us, it is all about getting the full team out. We had five or six lads back there this evening  and it made all the difference”.

Burt set their stall out from the start with a goal and two points in the opening six minutes. And they led 1-5 to 0-2 after 20 minutes and were ahead 1-5 to 0-4 at half-time.

“Yeah, we got off to a good start and then we stopped playing and allowed them back into the game with a couple of scores.

“We didn’t score for 18 minutes at either side of half-time. We were all over the place at the start of the second half. But young Darren Bradley stepped up to kick our first point of the second half to settle us.

“And we kicked on after Darren’s point and when Keith McColgan scored the second goal it was all over.“
