Dessie Gallagher with his sons Daire and Odhran
If Dungloe win the Donegal senior championship this Sunday, Dessie Gallagher, alongside his sons Daire and Odhran, will become only the fourth father/son pairing to win the Dr Maguire Cup as a manager and a player on the one team.
This has only been done three times in the history of the senior championship. Peadar McGeehin alongside his son Michael, were the first to do it back in 1983 with St Eunan’s with Peadar as manager, while a then 21-year-old Michael played at left-half back in the county final against Ardara.

This achievement was eventually equalled in 2000, when Ardara won their first senior county title since 1981, with Johnny Earley as team manager and his then 25-year-old son Don togging out at corner-forward.
John McGinley went one further in 2011 as joint-manager of Glenswilly with Gary McDaid, when he helped guide his side to their first county title in their history, with three sons on the panel, Darren lined out in the final at corner-forward, Marty replaced him on 42 minutes, and Dermot was also involved on the day.
