Carndonagh seek clarity on referee appointment following U-21B loss to Setanta

Carndonagh aren't happy that Setanta's own club official ended up refereeing the championship semi-final clash that the hosts edged by four points

Carndonagh seek clarity on referee appointment following U-21B loss to Setanta

Carndonagh GAA club has asked the Donegal Competitions Control Committee (CCC) to look into the circumstances where a home referee ended up in place to officiate their U-21 B semi-final encounter with Setanta last Sunday.

A Carn club official told DonegalLive that Gaeil Fhánada's Noel Mullaney had been originally appointed to take charge of the fixture but upon arrival at the Killygordon venue, their team was surprised to see Setanta's own James Callaghan in the middle.

The same spokesperson added that Carndonagh, in spite of their reservations, agreed to play the game which was a close encounter with Setanta running out winners by four points in the end on a difference of 1-11 to 2-4.

The Carn official stressed the fact that the club had no issue whatsoever with Mr Callaghan's performance or indeed the result but was instead seeking clarity on how the situation arose in the first place.

Meanwhile, the club have also asked the CCC to investigate a separate alleged incident between a Setanta spectator and a Carndonagh club member who acted as an umpire on the day.

Efforts made to contact the CCC for comment proved unsuccessful.
