Michael Murphy’s much talked-about return to the Donegal squad has been warmly welcomed by one of the great legends of Donegal football Tony Boyle.

The 1992 All-Ireland winner was one of the best full-forwards of his generation and he can’t wait to see Murphy, under the new playing rules, stationed much higher up the pitch this time around.

“Naturally I’m delighted to see Michael back,” he said. “What Donegal supporter would not like to see an icon of the game like Michael Murphy back in the green and gold.

“I’m sort of thinking the rules, which are going to suit him and the persuasive powers of Jim McGuinness, may have played a part in Michael having a change of heart.

“The question now is will Michael be happy enough to sit on the bench for some games and maybe play for 15 or 20 minutes as an impact sub?

“Knowing Michael, he will want to play every minute of every game. But I’m sure himself and Jim will work that out.

“It is a brilliant boost to Donegal supporters and I’m sure it is a brilliant boost to Jim and the rest of the Donegal squad to have some with the experience Michael has back involved.

“Someone made the point during the week to me that Michael, at 35,  is still a year younger than Paul Conroy who was named Player of the Year this season.

“Some people might wonder it is a year too late and might we have won an All-Ireland if he played this year?

“Michael, for his own reasons, was not available for the last couple years. But for me, the good thing is he is now back and will wear the green and gold again.

“So roll on 2025 because it’s going to be so exciting”.
