McGuinness: Langan injury shows Donegal weren't 'trying to feather our own nest'

Michael Langan captained Donegal against Kerry on Saturday only to be taken off early through injury

Jim McGuinness admits Michael Langan is likely to face a spell on the sidelines following Donegal’s victory over Kerry on Saturday.

Langan, who captained Donegal in their first two outings in the Allianz League Division 1, was replaced just three minutes into his side’s 0-23 to 1-18 win over Kerry in Killarney by Patrick McBrearty.

“He has definitely pulled his hamstring,” Donegal manager McGuinness said of the St Michael’s midfielder. “I suppose the travel as well - you know it's a long journey you know and that might’ve had an impact on it, maybe the game last week.”

Following Donegal’s opening victory of the campaign - the 0-20 to 0-16 success over Dublin the week before - both McGuinness and his Dublin counterpart Dessie Farrell made reference to the new rules in Gaelic football being more strenuous on players. McGuinness feels that the Football Review Committee (FRC) should look into increasing the number of substitutes that should be allowed to six not five.

“The challenges there are multiple of three or four or five in terms of what the football these boys were playing last year,” he added from Killarney. “That is the reality I mentioned that last weekend. A lot of people jumped on that - negatively I thought - that we were playing games or we were trying to feather our own nest to an extent.

“Like when the FRC had their first call with all the county managers, it lasted three hours and I never spoke. I never spoke on the call because it's not my place to speak on the call. It's the FRC that needs to decide what the rules are and we'll coach to those rules. But I think if you're asked your opinion you give your opinion and that stands as your opinion, not that some type of spin.”
