Action from Donegal's match against Kerry last weekend
Former Tipperary hurler Shane McGrath has praised Donegal for their remarkable victory over Kerry at the weekend, describing it as one of the standout results of 2025 in hurling so far.
The win, which saw Donegal defeat Kerry in the league for the first time, was a significant achievement for the team and for hurling in the county.
McGrath highlighted the immense effort put in by the Donegal hurlers, particularly under the guidance of manager Mickey McCann.
McCann, who has been instrumental in developing the sport in Donegal, is likened by McGrath to Pep Guardiola’s role at Barcelona for his ability to bring together club players, even those from rival clubs like Burt and Setanta and has successfully united the players under one banner.
"McCann has done such a brilliant job in uniting the club players, especially those from bitter rivals like Burt and Setanta, and getting them to show that when they pull the county jersey over their head, they are one club, one family, all fighting for the same cause," McGrath said.
The win over Kerry, McGrath explained, could be a reflection of Donegal's ongoing development of hurling talent. However, he cautioned that only time will tell whether it is more indicative of Donegal's rise or Kerry’s struggles.
For now, though, McGrath says the victory is a monumental moment for the county.
"This will do wonders for the development of hurling there," he said. "It’s a magical few days after winning a massive game, and league or not, this will have a lasting impact."

He commended the Donegal team for giving local hurling supporters one of their best days ever and hopes the team can build on this performance.
McGrath expressed optimism that the squad can also continue to push forward, with further good performances expected, even if a win over Kildare may be a stretch.
While success in the form of trophies is important, he stressed that the work being done now will benefit the development of future hurling talent in the county, creating a legacy that will extend beyond the current generation.
"As a player, you want to be winning right now, but what they are doing, unbeknownst to themselves, by working so hard, training to their max and putting their lives on hold, is the greatest gift they can give the future generations of hurlers in their counties," McGrath said.
“So, kudos to Mickey, his management team, and to the group of players themselves for giving Donegal hurling people one of their greatest days ever.”
