Darragh O'Donnell . . . goalscorer for Kilcar
Naomh Conaill's unbeaten run in the league stretching back three years came to an end in Davy Brennan Park against Kilcar
Naomh Conaill 0-5
Kilcar 1-9
"The league doesn't matter," quipped some of the Naomh Conaill supporters in front of the clubrooms afterwards.
In truth, it was a tame affair given the history between these two rivals. Naomh Conaill took some 37 minutes and 40 seconds to even raise a flag. I wonder when did they go a full half without scoring before? The Davy Brennan Park boys also have a new man in the backroom team in Barry Dunnion.
Kilcar led by 0-3 to no score at half-time despite hitting eight wides. The centre of the Naomh Conaill defence was missing Anthony Thompson and Eoin Waide, and it showed.
Still Kilcar, without Mark McHugh and with Stephen McBrearty coming in after half-time, were able to win with an ease that they rarely have against the Glenties men.
With the strong wind, Kilcar had most of the chances in the opening half. By the break, they had managed three scores but also hit eight wides.
Big Jason Campbell was on hand to fire over the first score on three minutes and Daniel Lyons came forward to add a second four minutes later.
But after that the scores dried up until the 26th minute when Ciaran McGinley lofted the only other score from the 45m line.
Naomh Conaill had their chances too with Paul McGuinness combining with Charles McGuinness on nine minutes only to see his goalbound effort come back off the bottom of the post.
Three minutes later the same player seemed to have got Naomh Conaill on the board but it was waved wide, although from the vantage point in front of the clubhouse it looked good.
Kilcar had a very good goal chance on 16 minutes when Conor Doherty put Ciaran McGinley through but a combination of Stephen Molloy and Stephen McGrath on the goalline, blocked it out for a '45'. Seanie Boyle also saw an effort come back off the upright and stay in play.
Half-time: Naomh Conaill 0-0, Kilcar 0-3.
A rain shower at half-time seemed to take the sting out of the wind and Kilcar took advantage with a goal three minutes into the second half. There was fortune attached as a Seanie Boyle fisted effort for a point came back off the crossbar and Darragh O'Donnell had the simple task of firing home from a yard out.
Andrew McClean had an effort waved wide, although one umpire gave it before Charles McGuinness at last got Naomh Conaill on the board.
Darragh O'Donnell pointed a free and Kilcar hit a post before O'Donnell opened the gap to 1-5 to 0-1 after 39 minutes.
Odhrán Doherty and John O'Malley hit long range points while Oran Doogan waltzed through the Naomh Conaill defence to fire over with a goal chance on.
Dermot Molloy and Eunan Doherty had the other two Naomh Conaill points while Stephen McBrearty (2) and Ciaran O'Donnell with his first touch after coming on as a sub, completed the scoring. Conor Doherty also brought a great save from Stephen McGrath in the final minutes.
