There was a familiar feeling for Dungloe and their manager Paul Duignan for the second year in a row following Sunday’s Donegal LGFA Junior A Championship defeat to Gaoth Dobhair.

The Rosses side played their part in an entertaining final at the Banks, only to lose out on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-7, having lost the decider in Milford 12 months ago against Robert Emmets.

“It is disappointing and heartbreaking for the girls,” said Duignan at the final whistle. “We got to the county final last year and we did not do ourselves justice against Robert Emmets and lost. And  we did not play to our usual standard out there again today either, which is very disappointing.

“Gaoth Dobhair were way better out there today and well done and fair play to them. We were dead on our feet in the first half and could not get away from them playing at all even though we were playing with the wind in the first half.”
Dungloe were two points up at the break on a 1-5 to 1-3 scoreline after playing with the aid of a strong downfield wind.

“The girls were really disappointed with the way they had played in the first half, at half time,” Duignan added. “We asked them to up their performance in the second half and they did but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.

“Their second goal was a real killer and they scored a point immediately afterwards to go three up. We tried afterwards to haul them back and they held on to win.”

Dungloe defeated championship favourites Downings in the semi-final. which was a big result and a big shock. However, the manager insisted complacency  was not a factor when paired off with their near-neighbours from Magheragallon in the final.

“We drilled it into them even though they had beaten Downings there was another championship game to be played and to be won,” Duignan added. “We made that quite clear to them over the last two weeks.”

Dungloe, despite the final defeat, still has a lot to be proud of when they sit down to reflect on the season.

“They won the Donegal Junior Comortás Peile na Gaeltachta championship and the Division 3 league and are looking forward to playing in Division 2 next season,” he added.  “We will be disappointed for some time after this defeat but when we look back on the season, it was a pretty good one.

"We set out to win the league and promotion. That was our main goal for the year and we did that. We will be playing in Division 2 next year which is good for the girls. They will play against better quality teams which can only be good for the girls. We added seven or eight minors to the squad this year and it will be good for them to play at a higher level against better opposition.”
