Donegal eyes on camogie final

Donegal is not known as a camogie stronghold but this weekend a corner of the county will be tuned into the All-Ireland Club Camogie final in Croke Park.

In the final Ardrahan, the Galway champions, will face Milford from Cork, the reigning All- Ireland champions. The Donegal link is through Ardrahan manager Michael Carr, from Kilcar. A keen footballer in his playing days with both his native Kilcar and Tir Chonaill Gaels, Michael is from a noted GAA family.

He is a brother of a number of Kilcar’s stalwarts from the 1980s and ‘90s - John, Maurice (London), James (Carndonagh) and sisters Margaret McGinley, Kilcar (wife of Sean) and Geraldine Kane, Mountcharles (husband Gerard).

Michael’s daughter Megan, who is still a minor, is also a member of the team, further strengthening the Donegal and Kilcar interest in the final.

“It is our first senior All-Ireland; we were beaten in the Intermediate final two years ago by Eoghan Ruadh from Derry,” said Michael, who guided Ardrahan to their first Galway senior championship in 2013.

“Naturally, there is a huge interest in the club. But also all the camogie clubs in the county are behind us and they are organising buses to go to Dublin on Sunday. A few of the family in Donegal are also talking about going up to the game.”
