Cllr Brian Carr said the woman had 'received a very convincing scam call'
A Donegal County Councillor says an elderly woman in his hometown was left in an emotional state, having been targeted by a phone scam.
Glenties native Cllr Brian Carr said the woman who was almost caught by the scammer was “still shaking.”
“I know scam calls seem to happen every day now, but this one really shook someone in our community,” Cllr Carr shared on Tuesday. “Earlier today, one of our older residents approached me on Main Street, visibly upset.
“She’d received a very convincing scam call. The caller claimed that money had been taken from her account and that someone would contact her later to arrange a refund. They asked for her mobile number, which she gave, and then went on to request her driving licence or passport number.

“Thankfully, she became suspicious and told them she would have a family member deal with it. The scammer immediately hung up. Please remind older adults and anyone vulnerable: never give personal, financial, or ID information over the phone. No legitimate company or bank will ever ask for this.
“Her parting words to me were: ‘I was nearly caught, and that scared me. I’m still shaking.’ She asked me to share this as a warning to others, so please, let’s help spread the word and look out for each other.”
