Water supply is returning to customers in parts of south-west Donegal that were affected by disruption to the Lettermacaward water treatment plant on Tuesday.

Uisce Éireann says the majority of customers in Lettermacaward, Dooey, Doochary, Gortnasillagh, Drumlaghdrid, Maas, Portnoo, Rainey, and surrounding areas who experienced a disruption to their supply will have water restored on Wednesday.

The alternative water supply which was made available on Tuesday at the chapel carpark in Lettermacaward will remain in place on Wednesday.

The utility has reminded customers to use their own containers when taking water from the tankers, and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure.

Uisce Éireann said crews worked through the night to get the plant back to full operation and the local reservoir and network has been replenishing since. It may take longer for those on higher ground or at the end of the network to have a full supply restored.

Uisce Éireann’s Damien O’Sullivan thanked customers for their patience while works at the plant were ongoing.

“We understand how inconvenient an unplanned outage is for the community, and we thank our customers for their support.”

Donegal Fianna Fáil TD Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher welcomed the return of the water supply.

“It will take some hours to build  up the supply and find its way to all of the houses that have been without water," he said.

“I welcome this news and shall continue to monitor developments.”
