The Creative Minorities Intercultural Inclusion project held its first event at Trinity Hall, Letterkenny, last weekend.

Initially launched in June, the program is part of Donegal’s PEACEPLUS local action plan.

With the first workshop event being held in Letterkenny, residents can expect workshops of the two-year project to come to Inishowen, Milford, Donegal Town, and Glenties in the near future.

Attendees at Trinity Hall also celebrated the legacy of former South African President Nelson Mandela on what was also designated by the United Nations as Nelson Mandela International Day.

Speaking of the Letterkenny event, the Chairperson of the Donegal Intercultural Platform said: “It was the launch of the Creative Minorities event. It is a project that will run for two years. It was a launch event for all the people of ethnic minority backgrounds in Donegal.

“There was a celebration with music, singing, and food.

“It is an important event because it celebrates the creative talent from minority groups in Donegal. It is a platform for all the minorities.

“Both adults and young people were included, and it also gets people to take part in more events that celebrate their own cultural backgrounds. It is getting people together.

“When you move somewhere and you are not from here, it can be isolating, so it is great to come together with other people who might feel the same way. It cancels isolation and builds friendships while being creative.”
