HIQA praises Letterkenny nursing home after unannounced inspection

St Eunan's Nursing Home

A Letterkenny nursing home was praised for allowing residents to enjoy a “good quality of life” and “eliminating the use of restrictive practices” in a latest Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) inspection report.

St Eunan’s Nursing Home, off the Ramelton Road, Letterkenny, was judged as a compliant centre after an unannounced inspection in April 2025.

The inspector, Nikhil Sureshkumar, complimented the nursing home for being a “well-run centre with good governance and management systems in place.”

“It was evident,” said Sureshkumar, “that residents were supported by staff to remain independent and to have their rights respected,” and that the feedback from residents and families “was complementary of the care and services.”

Social care activities and food were aspects of the care home that residents praised, and Sureshkumar observed “a spacious dining room, which was furnished with new furniture, to support a pleasant and comfortable dining experience.”

Residents were supported in taking part in “meaningful activities,” and the provider had also worked with a local charity and volunteers to “support the mental health and well-being of residents through activities, such as gardening.”

Families and friends of the residents were under no restrictions on visiting, with visitors confirming “they were always welcomed in this centre.”

In confirming the compliance of St Eunan’s Nursing Home to national standards, Sureshkumar concluded: “Residents enjoyed a good quality of life where the culture, ethos and delivery of care were focused on reducing or eliminating the use of restrictive practices.”
