Drink driving detections in Donegal doubles due to ‘proactive’ Garda approach

92% increase in drink-driving detections for the first six months of 2025 in Donegal

The Donegal Garda Roads Policing Inspector said the rise of drink-driving detections was due to a “more proactive approach.”

Drink-driving detections in Donegal nearly doubled in the first six months of 2025 compared to the same time period in 2024, according to newly-released data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Within Donegal, crimes involving threatening behaviour and harassment rose in the first six months of 2025, compared to the same time period the year before; however, sexual offences, burglary, theft, and controlled drug offences actually decreased.

Gardaí in Donegal detected 221 cases of drink driving from January to June of 2025, a rise of 92% compared to the 115 cases detected in 2024.

Roads Policing Inspector, Sean McDaid, told Donegal Live: “It is a more proactive approach by the front line and road policing units within Donegal Garda Division, as well as an increase in Mandatory Intoxication Checkpoints.

“Also, a more proactive approach from road policing and frontline members.

“Please don’t drive under the influence of an intoxicant; drink, drugs, or a combination of both.”
