Speeding and drink driving offences increased in Donegal during 2025

Figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reveal that crime incidents involving driving, such as speeding and driving while over the legal alcohol limit, have increased significantly in Donegal.

The CSO released crime figures for the third quarter of 2025 for each Garda Division in the country. Crime involving speed and driving while over the legal alcohol limit in Donegal for the first three quarters of 2025 had already surpassed the total figures for the respective crimes in 2024.

Regarding speeding, in 2024, 500 offences had been recorded throughout the whole 12 months within the region monitored by the Donegal Garda Division; however, that had already been beaten in the first nine months of 2025, from January until September, with 591 offences, with incidents in the final three months of 2025 yet to be recorded.

The 591 offences recorded from January 2025 to September 2025 mark a 15.4% increase from the whole of 2024’s recorded speeding offences.

Likewise, for driving while over the legal alcohol limit, 264 offences had been recorded for the 12 months of 2024 within Donegal Garda Division’s region, compared to the 308 offences that had been recorded from January 2025 to September 2025, an increase of 14.3% with three further months of 2025 to consider.

Statistics from the final three months of 2025 are to be released by the CSO in the early months of 2026.
