A South Donegal-based football club has launched a public appeal for old photographs and footage to help it celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Letterbarrow Celtic FC, based in the foothills of the Bluestack Mountains, launched the appeal online in order to develop a 50th anniversary commemoration book.

Club Captain, James McGroary Jr, told Donegal Live: “We are having a 50th anniversary dinner dance in the summer of 2026. This is our 50th season, which has already commenced in September.

“To commemorate the 50th anniversary, Billy Kennedy designed a new logo, and we also launched a new kit this year, going back to our roots.

“We are sponsored by O’Neill’s Pub in Letterbarrow, and we wanted it to be a kit to buy and there are a lot of locals wearing the jersey, which is nice to see.

“We are launching a book this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Peter Campbell (Former Donegal Democrat Sports Editor) is also involved. We just want to get as many photos and memorabilia as possible for the book, but we know there are a lot of hidden gems from previous players that we want to showcase.

“We thought that we would put out a request for some old footage and photos that we can use this year.”

When asked about the community importance of Letterbarrow Celtic FC, James replied: “I would say it is a very important club. It is much more than a football club. If it were only a football club, it probably would not still be going. It is a resource for young people to go out and be able to feel something. Everybody is welcome to Letterbarrow Celtic.

“We understand it is difficult for young people at the moment. A lot of people don’t have hobbies or pastimes like they used to. This is an escapism from work, college or worries, and it is a good, welcoming place to go and have fun.”
