A motion was submitted to the Donegal Municipal District Council to make repairs to the Boat Quay in Bundoran to help prevent flooding.

Bundoran-based Michael McMahon submitted the motion during March’s monthly meeting, calling on Donegal MD to “make representation to the marine section of Donegal County Council regarding flooding and repairs to the Boat Quay, Bundoran.”

The executive of Donegal County Council responded by stating that they did not want to “take away from the character of the pier.”

An official response, signed off by the Resident Engineer of Donegal County Council, Cathal Sweeney, stated: “The Piers & Harbours section is aware of the issues with ponding at Bundoran pier.

“Bundoran pier is almost 150 years old and one of the few remaining cobbled piers in the county. Some settlement is taking place here, and this is causing the ponding.

“It is difficult to get a solution to this without taking up the cobbles, cleaning them and relaying them.

“We do not want to overlay or replace with a concrete deck, as this would take away from the character of the pier.

“We will, however, examine the options and determine what the best solution is to this problem.”

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr McMahon commented: “The Boat Quay in Bundoran is very important because it is an active part of Bundoran.

“The actual platform of the quay itself is very old, and there are cut stones in it, and a lot of flooding in it.

“Is there anything to raise it up a level a little bit, and make it level?

“It is used by the RNLI, surfers, swimmers and tourists alike. There has not been that much money spent on it last year and the year before.

“The stone is unique on the platform. What I would like is that this rise up, so the flooding would stop. It is a very old part of Bundoran, and it has served its time very well.

“It is a big tourist attraction. It would enhance the area in the West End and the whole Quay.”

Supporting the motion, Cllr Noel Jordan noted that there was “a bit of positivity,” and that in his opinion, Cathal Sweeney had “recognised it.”
