Credit Union seeks planning approval for former Raphoe Ulster Bank renovation

Subject site of the planning application for Raphoe branch of the Lifford Credit Union

The Lifford Credit Union Ltd are seeking planning approval from Donegal County Council for the renovation and refurbishment of the former Ulster Bank premises in Raphoe.

In 2017, Ulster Bank shut down its branch in The Diamond, Raphoe, and the building was later taken over by the local credit union, who were based at Meetinghouse Street.

The local credit union submitted a planning permission application to adapt the front elevation facade, build a new upper internal floor to the front section of the structure and a new upper rear floor, including upper level windows, and to raise the ridge level on the existing rear extension and all associated site works.

In the submitted application, MCM Associates Architecture & Surveying, on behalf of the applicants, stated: “The current location of the Raphoe(Lifford)Credit Union has been in operation since 1991, and the location has now outgrown its usefulness, due to the location of the nearby mini roundabout, and the low number of client and staff car parking bays.

“Planning permission was granted in 2008 to demolish the existing structure and build a new building located in Meetinghouse Street on its present site, but even with additional ground acquired from the Office of Public Works, it was decided it was more prudent to purchase a ready made former financial institution building, .ie. the former Ulster Bank building located on the Diamond, when it came on the market.”

The company concluded: “It is felt that the proposed works should not cause any substantial issues in relation to visual intrusion, and are unlikely to affect the Planning and Development of the area as envisaged by the Planning Authority.

“It is hoped a favourable decision is forthcoming, as this building will continue to serve the needs of the community for many more decades to come.”

Donegal County Council has set a decision due date for the submitted planning application for May 6.
