This Saturday an exciting new chapter in North West basketball begins when for the first time LYIT will field a team in the Irish National League. As part of a long term plan to develop basketball in the region the LYIT College has invested in entering a team into the Irish National League in order to bring a high level of basketball to the area.

In the opening game of the season LYIT will face a tough task as they come up against of the pre-season favourites to win the league, the University of Ulster Elks. Elks have a talented squad filled with Irish internationals, Lithunaina and American players.

The LYIT team is comprised from students and players from the local areas of Letterkenny, Donegal, Derry and Tyrone. The team is also bolstered by two American Victory Scholars who are studying at LYIT as part of the Sport Changes Life programme. T-John Casiello and Jack Mackey will be an integral part of the team this year and will also be coaching in clubs and schools in the area throughout the year.

Head Coach Niall McDermott is looking forward to the game “It’s been a long pre-season and we have put in a lot of hard work so everyone is really looking forward to just getting on the court and getting the season underway. For most of the guys in the squad it will be their first ever time competing at this level and we are expecting a steep learning curve but we know we have the talent to compete and we will get better as the season progresses.”

Admission is from 3.30pm with a tip off time of 4pm. It promises to be a competitive, high scoring and exciting game and we would advise anyone looking to attend to get there early!
