Daniel and Majella O’Donnell were celebrating an IFTA award at the Irish Film and Television Academy’s (IFTA) Gala television awards last night.
Daniel & Majella’s B&B Road Trip in the factual category.
At the glitzy ceremony, to be televised tonight by TV3, there was another Donegal connection when Mícheál Ó Meallaigh, a native of Lettermacaward, was honoured with an IFTA award for his Outstanding Contribution to the television industry and to the Irish language.
Ó Meallaigh is TG4’s Commissioning Director. Last night the Irish Film & Television Academy presented him with an Irish Academy Award for Outstanding Contribution, as part of IFTA's celebration of TG4's 20th anniversary of broadcasting.
Micheál has been described as “a visionary and pro-active giant of the Irish language”.
Meanwhile there was no statuette this time for former winner, Donegal director Garry Keane, who was nominated in two categories. Keane, from Ballyshannon, who has had an IFTA nomination for the last eight years in a row, had suspected himself that he would do well to win such was the level of competition in the categories he was nominated in.
Pat Kenny was awarded a lifetime achievement while RTÉ’s Brendan O’Connor, comedienne Sharon Horgan, and King of camp comedy Al Porter were among other winners at the awards.
Presented by Amanda Byram, the event in Dublin’s DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel was attended by some of the country’s most popular broadcasters and performers, including Miriam O’Callaghan, Bob Geldof, Brendan O’Carroll,Pat Shortt and Olivia O’Leary.
