Two XL Bully dogs surrendered in Donegal

Two XL Bully dogs have been surrendered to Donegal County Council from February to the end of March, out of 48 surrendered to local authorities across the country. This included 11 bullies in Dublin City Council and 10 in Limerick.

New laws on the owning and breeding of XL Bully dogs were enacted from February 1st following several serious attacks.

Last June, 23-year-old Nicole Morey was attacked and killed by two XL Bully dogs at her home in Ballyneety, County Limerick.

In November 2022, nine-year-old Alejandro Mizsan was savagely attacked by a 10-month-old XL Bully dog in County Wexford, suffering injuries to his face, body and legs.

The tragedy led to a review ordered by then Minister Heather Humphries, and new laws were introduced in relation to the breeding and ownership of the breed.

In October last year, it became illegal to import, breed, rehome or resell an XL Bully dog. The dogs were banned from February 1st, making it illegal to own the dangerous dog without a certificate of exemption.

The certificate means a person can keep their XL Bully at their address until the end of their natural life. There were 1,800 applications made for exemption certificates, and to date 1,000 have been granted. Breaches of the laws can result in fines of up to €2,500 and/or three months' imprisonment.
