Decades of dedication: Greencastle Community Centre director celebrates 90th birthday

George McGuinness is set to celebrate his 90th birthday.

Greencastle Community Centre says it’s “thrilled” to announce that its long-serving director, George McGuinness, is set to celebrate a landmark birthday.

George, who turns 90 years old on Tuesday, November 11, has been an instrumental leader and director of the busy centre for almost 35 years, dating back to the very beginning.

The original Drumaweir National School was purchased from the Derry Diocese in 1991, and following numerous major renovations, the building has been revolutionised into the large, modern multi-purpose community facility it is today.

Everyone involved with the centre is “incredibly proud” of George’s foundational role in that transformative journey over the past three-and-a-half decades.

Greencastle Community Centre manager Susan McAleer says his relentless commitment to the centre is remarkable.

“He never misses a monthly board meeting, has been instrumental in countless fundraising campaigns, and is renowned for always having a practical solution for every challenge.”

“George’s dedication over the last three-and-a-half decades has been the backbone of the centre and continues to inspire the board, staff and management team.”

“The board of directors, management, staff, and the wider Greencastle community extend their heartfelt best wishes and gratitude on his 90th birthday.”

Meanwhile, George worked for many years as a bus driver and conductor for the Lough Swilly Transport Company. He is also a former founder director of Foyle Credit Union, which is now known as Inishowen Credit Union.
