Countdown to Buncrana’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’, as local cast brings magic to stage

Rehearsals for Beauty and the Beast, which opens in Buncrana on Sunday, March 1.

A dedicated cast and crew are putting the final touches to Beauty and the Beast, which is taking place March 1-7 in St Mary’s Hall, Buncrana.

The production brings together a strong mix of experienced performers, new faces and young talent, all of whom have been committing additional time outside of scheduled rehearsals to ensure the show reaches the highest standard possible.

At the heart of the story is Shannon Doherty as Belle, delivering a thoughtful and warm performance, alongside Benny Porter as the Beast, whose emotional portrayal anchors the production.

Comedy and character are provided by Matthew Grant as Maurice, with Patrick Gill embracing the larger-than-life role of Gaston, supported by Eoghan O’Boyle as Lefou.

Magic and mystery are introduced by Chai Osuere and Leia Doherty as the Enchantress, while the enchanted household comes to life through Ultan Henderson as Lumiere, Geraldine Doherty as Mrs Potts, Michelle Bradley as Cogsworth, Sharon O’Donnell as Madame de la Grande Bouche, and Elaina McGinley as Babette.

The role of Chip is shared by Leighton Downey and Odhran Culligan, whose enthusiasm has been a highlight of rehearsals.

Energy and colour are brought to the stage by the La Filles ensemble – Jade Robinson, Amber Deeney, Kate Wilson, Karla Mae Doherty, LilyMay Tolley, Eadaoin Page, and Eimear Doherty Hughton – alongside Stephen Callaghan as Rug, rounding out a lively and committed cast.

Director and Producer Maureen Loughrey Tolley said the effort being made by the cast, particularly the chorus, has been exceptional.

“While the lead roles are important, the chorus is the backbone of this show. They are putting in huge work at rehearsals, learning music, choreography and multiple cameo roles, often staying on for extra practices. Their energy and commitment lift the entire production, and alongside our volunteers and production crew, they make this show what it is.”

Behind the scenes, the production is supported by a volunteer committee managing the many non-performance elements required to bring a large-scale musical to the stage.

Committee member Adrian McMyler said the organisational side of the show is every bit as demanding as the rehearsals themselves.

“There is a massive amount of work happening away from the stage, from licensing and finances to promotion, scheduling, ticketing and venue coordination. That business end is carried by volunteers giving their time week after week, and it is just as important as what happens under the lights. This production is a real community effort.”

Speaking in his role as PRO, McMyler also highlighted the level of support and excitement building around the show.

“We’ve been blown away by the support and buzz around this production. The cast were especially excited to receive video messages of encouragement from Dana, Daniel O’Donnell and Eric Roberts, along with a letter from the President of Ireland. Uachtarán Catherine Connolly has also sent a special message which will appear in the programme, and that meant a huge amount to everyone involved.”

Beauty and the Beast is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) and is based on the original Broadway production.

Tickets are selling quickly, with limited availability remaining for the Sunday matinee on 1st March, as well as the Friday 6th and Saturday 7th March performances.

Tickets can be purchased from St Mary’s Hall box office each evening from 7pm, or online via www.ticketsource.com.
