The Board of Directors of the Greencastle Community Centre says it’s both “proud and sentimental” to announce the retirement of one of its most pivotal figures, George McGuinness.
After serving as a founding director and a dedicated board member for nearly 35 years, George is stepping down from his formal governance role, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy of community development.
Since the centre’s very beginning, George, who turned 90-years-old last year, has been an instrumental leader. He has provided the vision and stability necessary to grow the organisation into the thriving hub it is today.
George’s dedication over the last three-and-a-half decades has been described as the “backbone” of the centre, inspiring generations of staff, management, and fellow board members.

While he is retiring from the board, George’s connection to the centre will remain as strong as ever.
The Community Centre Board is delighted to announce that George has now been appointed as the official Community Champion.
“In this new honorary role, he will continue to represent the heart and soul of Greencastle, ensuring that his decades of local knowledge and passion for the area continue to guide our mission,” explains chairperson Catherine Gillespie.
George is also a former founding director of Foyle Credit Union (now Inishowen Credit Union), while before that, he worked for many years with the Lough Swilly Transport Company.
Greencastle Community Centre extends its deepest gratitude to him for his lifetime of service and looks forward to the next chapter with George as its Community Champion.
