An existing caravan is to be repurposed and extended to form a taverna-style restaurant at artists retreat
An Inishowen artists’ haven is seeking a new lease of life, as plans have been lodged to transform an existing retreat into a distinctive taverna-style restaurant while retaining its creative roots.
The proposal by Cavajet centres on the evolution of the well-known Artists’ Retreat in Greencastle at Halyon Village, an arts-focused destination where painters, musicians, performers, and writers gather to work and showcase their talents.
At present, the retreat consists of a static caravan with a timber veranda, several small outbuildings, decking, and pathways leading down to the shore. It has long served as a space for artistic reflection, yoga, and small private gatherings, as well as providing access to the sea for activities such as kayaking and scuba diving.
Under the new plans, the existing caravan will be repurposed and extended to form the heart of a taverna-style restaurant. A modest commercial kitchen, storage space, and toilet facilities for staff and customers are to be added, while the current veranda, along with a proposed extension, will become a weatherproof dining area.
The development also includes a series of outdoor seating spaces positioned between the caravan and the shoreline. Existing decking and paved areas will be reconfigured to improve access to these new dining spots, with additional pathways linking the site.
Other elements of the application include the retention of an existing landscaped wall, completion of a customer car park, and the creation of a new vehicular entrance. Plans also provide for improved pedestrian and delivery access to the kitchen, a new sewage treatment system, and a dedicated service road to allow emergency vehicle access.
Some structures currently on site, including a kayak store and a portable toilet, are to be removed as part of the redevelopment.
If approved, the development would mark a significant step in the ongoing evolution of Halyon Village, blending its established creative ethos with a new hospitality offering along the Foyle coast.
