There’s been a call for speed ramps to be installed at a stretch of road just outside Letterkenny that is causing concerns for residents.

The speed of cars at Glenkeeran on the Knockbrack to Glenmaquin Road was highlighted by Cllr Donal Coyle at the Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting.

“On that particular part of the road, two elderly ladies live in separate houses and their gates are close to the road,” he said. “The speed of cars going by there is horrendous.”

Cllr Coyle mentioned how this issue is causing difficulty for a local farmer to move livestock into fields across the road.

“There has to be some way of slowing traffic in that particular area and ramps are the only way,” he said. “There has to be a serious look at how traffic can be slowed down. Everybody coming from Convoy and Raphoe uses the main road and the volume of traffic has increased.”

The motion was seconded by Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly. David McIlwaine, Senior Executive Engineer, Roads, informed Cllr Coyle that “as this is in a rural area with no public lighting, it is not a suitable or safe location to erect speed ramps. A safety assessment can be carried out to establish if any other measures would be feasible.”
