The development will be a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments and maisonettes, and two, three, four, and five-bedroom houses
Donegal County Council’s proposal for the 172-unit housing development at Ballymacool in Letterkenny, which will cost around €50 million, has been approved by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
The application was moved from the planning stage into pre-construction after Donegal County Council granted Part 8 planning approval in September 2025.
Welcoming the decision by the Department of Housing, Local Government, Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue of Fionna Fáil, said: “This is hugely positive news for Letterkenny and the North West. This development will help address the ever-increasing demand for houses in the town, while also helping to stabilise house prices.
“This housing project will be constructed on a greenfield site that is owned by Donegal County Council. It will be delivered in two phases – 100 units will be completed in 2027, with the remaining 72 being built in 2028.

The development will be a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments and maisonettes, and two, three, four, and five-bedroom houses. It will also include ten two-bedroom independent living houses and one five-bedroom group home with on-site HSE support.
Minister McConalogue added: “While it’s about building houses, it’s also about building a vibrant and integrated community that meets the diverse needs of our people. This project at Ballymacool demonstrates that Fianna Fáil in government is fully committed to delivering on its housing programme,” he said.
“Getting more houses built is essential. I thank Donegal County Council and Minister James Browne for all their work on this planning application, and I look forward to construction getting underway and the first keys being handed over next year.
“The construction of the development will provide a significant boost to local employment and the regional construction sector."
