The mayor of Letterkenny wants Bernard McGlinchey Town Park to the site of a memorial to Covid-19 victims
Letterkenny’s mayor has called for a stone commemorating those who lost their lives to Covid-19.
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh, who says the stone would also acknowledge the role of frontline workers during the pandemic, has called for Bernard McGlinchey Town Park to be the site of the memorial.
The Fine Gael councillor raised the issue at this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District when he also called for more car parking at the park.
Cllr Kavanagh said it was a good news story for the park that its popularity means there is a need for additional parking.
He said a number of new developments coming on stream at the park, including the restoration of the Sweet Factory playground, mean additional car parking is required.
Cllr Kavanagh said last year there were times when people were arriving at the park but had to leave due to a lack of car parking.
“It is such a great space for people and such a great space for families,” he said.
Donegal County Council said that when the weather is suitable the grass area adjacent to the existing car park is opened to provide additional parking spaces. The council said it is attempting to identify sources of funding to surface the grass area for all year parking.
