Letterkenny traffic chaos leaves buses stuck in queues, with delays on routes

Ongoing gridlock delaying public transport, with passengers warned of lengthy hold-ups on services
Traffic congestion in Letterkenny is getting worse and worse, with the return of schools after the summer holidays adding further pressure to the town’s already heavily congested road network.
Roads in all directions into and out of Letterkenny are routinely reduced to long queues, with thousands of vehicles attempting to get through the town each day.
But the worsening traffic is not only causing frustration for motorists – it is also having a major impact on public transport, with buses struggling to keep to scheduled timetables.
The problem was highlighted this morning by local bus operator Bus Feda after its 964 Donegal to Galway service was delayed by traffic congestion in Letterkenny.
The company reported that the bus was “currently stuck in traffic on the mountain top” and said it would provide a further update when it reached the Letterkenny stop.
The bus departed the Letterkenny stop at 9.25am, but passengers travelling to the remaining stops on the route were warned to expect delays of at least 25 minutes compared with the published timetable.
The operator apologised to passengers for the inconvenience, while stressing that the delays were “out of our control”.
The incident highlights how severe congestion is increasingly affecting those who rely on public transport, with buses unable to bypass the queues and potentially leaving passengers facing significant delays to their journeys.
The latest problems have prompted renewed public frustration, with questions being raised about what is being done to tackle Letterkenny’s daily traffic gridlock.
Some questioned whether those responsible could “not see clearly what is happening with this congestion every single day”, while others criticised the provision of cycle lanes and suggested that bus lanes could have been a more effective way of helping public transport move through the town.
There are also concerns that the situation will only worsen as Letterkenny continues to expand, with new housing and apartment developments increasing the number of daily journeys into and out of the town.
With schools now back, the pressure on Letterkenny’s roads — and on the buses trying to navigate them — is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
