A local councillor has described the appointment of a full-time litter warden for east Donegal as ‘great news’.
Cllr Patrick McGowan made the comment during a discussion on environmental issues at this morning’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD).
Paul Gallagher, of Donegal County Council’s Environment Section, confirmed the warden was now in place and that a separate position of Waste Awareness Officer has also been offered to one of the successful applicants.
“That’s great news on both fronts,” Cllr McGowan said. Cllr Gary Doherty also welcomed the appointments and said it was something he and his colleagues had been pushing for some time.
“That’s good news and something we have been pushing for this for a long time., but we were left for far too long without a litter warden,” he said
“The process took far too long and that shouldn’t happen again. Litter wardens are very important positions and wardens in other areas took up the slack while we didn’t have one”.
At an earlier meeting, it was claimed that Lifford-Stranorlar only had a ‘half’ litter warden as it was being covered by personnel from other areas.
