Concerns raised over impact of Twin Towns traffic on air quality

Concerns have been raised over air quality in the Twin Towns

A Councillor has raised concerns that traffic gridlock in the Twin Towns is affecting air quality there.

The matter was highlighted by Cllr Patrick McGowan at today’s monthly meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD).

“Without being an expert in this area, the amount of traffic stalled in Ballybofey is obviously having a serious effect on the air quality,” he said.

“This is a perfect storm for pollutants, with vehicles sitting still in the middle of the town”.

Cllr McGowan called on Donegal County Council to install an air quality monitoring station.

“There has been some monitoring on the outskirts, but it needs to be in the town centre. The Garda Station would be the perfect location as it is a public building. There is funding there for this”.

In response, Caroline McCleary of the council’s Environment Section said she would inform the executive that the Garda Station is now the preferred location and that funding would be sought for an air quality monitoring facility.
