Cllr Tom Conaghan
Fears that minor incidents of anti-social behaviour in Donegal Town could escalate if not checked now have been aired by local councillor, Tom Conaghan.
His concerns are to be debated at this morning's (Tuesday) meeting of the Donegal Municipal District.
He has tabled a motion to ask for additional policing resources for the town to assist with speed limit and other traffic enforcement matters.
He has also tabled a question which asks for the installation of additional CCTV and an increased garda presence to act as a deterrent to anti-social behaviour, such as an incident they had during the last weekend of January.
Cllr Conaghan said he felt a larger garda presence would help prevent any potential trouble before it developed.
"Donegal Town is by and large a quiet place where people can go out and enjoy themselves and that is good for the town and the local economy.
"The garda presence would ensure it stays that way. At the moment manpower is not what it should be. I don't want anything to happen that's why I am calling for more action on a few fronts to nip any potential trouble from ever happening."
He added he was in no way knocking people coming into the town or the nightlife enjoyed by so many but he was just anxious that the good reputation as a safe place to visit was not tarnished in any way.
"I’d like to encourage prevention at an early stage rather than having to react if something happened," he said.
