Friday evening Mass in Glenties was celebrated with “greater intensity” as parishioners flocked to pray for Cian Doherty, the young man seriously injured in a road traffic collision on Wednesday.

The young Glenties man is in the Mater Hospital in Dublin, where he is being treated for injuries sustained in the collision just before 6am on Wednesday.

The vehicle he was driving while on his way to work was involved in a single-vehicle collision on the R261 road between Maas and Portnoo.

Parish priest Fr Gerard Cunningham said parishioners gathered for Mass at St Connell's Church in Glenties “with poignancy and greater intensity this evening as we pray for healing and for the health and for the well-being of young Cian Doherty,” Fr Cunningham said.

“Many of you know him very well. The sad accident that occurred sent shock waves into so many here and beyond.”

Having initially been taken to Letterkenny University Hospital, he was transferred to the Mater.

A former Donegal underage player, Cian has been a member of the Naomh Conaill senior football team in recent years.

Fr Cunningham thanked the “skills, service and vocation” of the medics who have been taking care of Cian and prayed for his recover.

He said: “We offer our sincere solidarity and our support and our goodnesses and we pray to god to bring healing to bear and to restore life and well-being to all who seek it this night.

“We pray for and ask for God's solace and strength for all the family.”

The Naomh Conaill GAA said in a social media post: “All Cian's teammates and everyone at Naomh Conaill wish Cian a full recovery. All our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Cian and we hope to see you back among us as soon as possible.”
