'Why have we only half of a litter warden?' Lifford-Stranorlar Councillor asks

Donegal County Council hops to be in a position to appoint a full-time litter warden in the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District soon.

The matter was raised at the latest meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar MD by Councillor Patrick McGowan, who said the fact that the area had only a part-time litter warden is “not on”.

“A couple of years ago, we went for two years with a litter warden,” Councillor McGowan said.

“We have a vast area here with a very long border and a lot of forestry land. We deserve to have our own litter warden.”

Councillor McGowan told the meeting that it was something that “needs to be sorted”.

He said the Council’s Director of Water and Environment, Michael McGarvey, should be called to the next meeting if it is not sorted “to explain why we only have half a litter warden”.

He said that someone is covering the Lifford-Stranorlar MD while also operating in another area.

“We can’t be left with the short straw every single time,” he said.

Paul Gallagher, an environmental officer with the Council, said they had hoped that the matter would have been regularised by now.

“It was an ongoing issue a number of years ago,” he said. “We are trying to get it resolved as quickly as possible.”
