As the process of de-congregation at the Ard Greine facility in Stranorlar continues, the HSE has sought planning permission for an extension to another site in Letterkenny.

The HSE is seeking to add a 169-square-metre extension to Mol an Oige, Listillion, Letterkenny.

Last year, it emerged that residents were to be moved out of Ard Greine, the former Sean O’Hare Unit, in Stranorlar. The facility was established in 2008 and provides residential facilities for around 30 adults with mild-to-severe intellectual disabilities.

At the time, the HSE confirmed that it planned to undertake measures in line with recommendations in the Time to Move on from Congregated Settings – A Strategy for Community Inclusion report.

In a letter to Donegal County Council submitted in support of a planning application for the Mol an Oige building, the HSE says that residents “are currently living in a congregated setting and the approval of the planning application would give these residents the benefit of both community inclusion and social integration as well as having the opportunity to live in a home that meets their own taste and needs.”

The letter added: “Approval of the planning application will allow the de-congregation of Ard Gréine Court and would also allow these individuals to remain near the area where they have lived for most if not all of their lives and as such are familiar with the area.

“The residents currently proposed to move into this house if approved are native to the area and have families and friends that live close by, they have significant care needs which are currently provided by healthcare professionals that are also resident to the local area.”

The planning application seeks permission for the demolition of an existing garage and for the construction of a single-storey extension. The application provides for all associated hard landscaping works and services.
