Adventurers canoeing around Ireland meet a new friend in south-west Donegal

Adventurers from the UK are currently canoeing around Ireland for charity and met a well-wisher or two in Donegal.

On Saturday at An Port, near Glencolmcille, on day 19, having set off from Crosshaven Marina, Co Cork, Rich Ensoll and Johan Hoving were met by tourists where they exchanged stories about their journey so far

They shared stories of how things have gone thus far, including one about waves as tall as a two storey house and them in the trough.

Nina Taplick, a German landy touring in her camper van, was part of the conversation and soon, at the canoers’ request, her dog Alva was soon posing for photographs.

If successful the canoers will be the first ever to canoe around the entire coastline of Ireland in a handmade, skin-on-frame canoe.

Funds raised will support Oxfam Ireland’s work in tackling poverty and injustice, as well as the Kepplewray Trust’s Participation and Inclusion Fund, which helps people of all abilities access outdoor experiences.

Their vessel, Ronan, was crafted in Ireland by John Wilkinson of Valkyrie Craft, inspired by ancient boat-building traditions that stretch back thousands of years. The canoe’s design echoes the curragh, once a vital link between coastal communities and a symbol of resilience and exploration.
