A spokesperson for the Department of Transport told Donegal Live: “Earlier this afternoon, the Irish Coast Guard was alerted to an incident in the Bluestack Mountains, County Donegal.

“Following the request for assistance for Donegal Mountain Rescue Team, Maritime Rescue Sub Centre Malin Head tasked the Sligo based Coast Guard helicopter R118 to the scene where an injured walker required an airlift.

“The casualty was lifted to R118 and taken to Sligo Hospital where they were transferred into the care of the HSE.”

Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) confirmed that they were tasked at 1.31pm to assist a walker who had fallen and sustained a back injury in Lough Belshade.

"A full team callout was initiated," said the spokesperson. "Our hasty team reached the casualty first to provide initial assessment and stabilisation. The main team followed with stretcher and wheel equipment.

"Following assessment on scene, it was determined that helicopter evacuation would be the most appropriate option. Rescue 118 arrived and successfully winched the casualty to Sligo University Hospital.

"The team was stood down and returned to base following the successful evacuation by 19:07.

"Our thanks to Malin Head Coastguard and Rescue 118 for their assistance.

"We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery."
