The Church of the Sacred Heart in Dunlewey has been closed due to storm damage
The iconic Church of the Sacred Heart in Dunlewey has been closed due to storm damage.
The church, which offers breathtaking views of Errigal mountain and The Poisoned Glen, suffered storm damage this week.
During Storm Chandra, slates became dislodged from the roof of the building.
“The Sacred Heart Church, Dunlewey is closed for safety reasons until further notice,” a statement from the Gaoth Dobhair parish said.
“We are doing everything possible to make the building and grounds safe, and we hope to be in a position to reopen as normal for Mass on Friday morning at 8:30am.”
The public have been asked not to enter or approach the building while it is being made safe and the necessary repair work is being carried out.

The Church of the Sacred Heart is one of four Catholic Churches in the parish of Gaoth Dobhair. Last Easter, Teach Pobail Mhuire in Derrybeg was destroyed by fire and parishioners have been attending the other three churches for Masses: Church of the Sacred Heart; Teach Pobail Cholmcille, Cnoc Fola; and St Patrick’s in Meenaweel.
