The Poor Farmers Auction was as successful as ever despite having to move online

A grand total of €35,000 raised at the Poor Farmers’ Auction was divided between four charities close to the hearts of people of Ardara.

Presentations of €8,750 each were made last Saturday evening to the Bluestacks Special Needs Foundation, Donegal Cancer Flights and Services, MS Ireland and Ronald McDonald House.

The auction itself was held in late December. It has traditionally taken place in Teague’s Bar in Ardara, with the venue going all out to create a wild west atmosphere and a great night’s entertainment. However, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the auction was based in the mart with bids being taken online for the second year running.

John Breslin from the Poor Farmers’ Auction committee: “Thank you to everybody who supported the auction. We are delighted with the money that was raised, especially with it all taking place online.

“I would especially like to acknowledge the support from the people who donated lots. Without that we would have nothing.”

Lots at the auction ranged from a purebred Swale Hogget ewe and a Perth Hogget ewe to Garth Brooks tickets, crush and run, poultry, and baked goods.

With over 100 lots in total, there is a huge amount of work involved.

Mr Breslin said: “I would also like to thank all the people on the committee and everyone who works behind the scenes.

“Hopefully in December, all going well, we will be back in Teague’s Bar.”

This year’s auction brings the total amount raised over 16 years to more than €400,000, benefiting many worthy causes near and far. It really is testament to the commitment of the organisers, donors, supporters and everyone who contributes in any way.
