No plans to close Letterkenny's Main Street due to the Donegal International Rally

Letterkenny councillors have moved to dismiss “rumours” that the town's Main Street is to be closed for the duration of this weekend's Donegal International Rally.

This weekend will see thousands of visitors come to the town for the 50th anniversary of the event.

Speaking at the June meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, Cllr Michael McBride said rumours have been circulating that the Main Street is going to be closed over the weekend due to the rally.
He said the council “need to nip it in the bud” as it seems to “have gathered a head of steam”.

Cllr Gerry McMonagle, chair of the Donegal joint policing committee, said there had been a recent meeting of rally “stakeholders” in recent days but there had been no talk about closing the street off.
He said it may be necessary for gardaí to close the road off occasionally “out of necessity” to maintain the free flow of traffic.
The right turning lane entering the Cullion Road from the N56 four-lane road will be closed from Thursday to Monday due to the rally.
