Tributes are being paid to the founder an Irish Air Ambulance Service and chief fundraiser for a major hospital.

Micheál Sheridan, who was the founder of Cork's Community Air Ambulance service and Mercy Hospital fundraising chief, passed away following a brief battle with cancer.

Formerly a native of Cavan, he lived in Knocklong, Co Limerick.

He had previously founded the air ambulance service in the county - the first of its kind in Ireland.

In a statement, Mercy Hospital Foundation said: "On behalf of the Mercy University Hospital Foundation’s Board of Directors and the entire fundraising team, we extend our deepest sympathies to Micheál’s family - his wife Claire, and their four sons Éanna, Rían, Finn and Caelán; as well as to Micheál’s mother Marie, and siblings Darina, Noírín, Sean and Niall.

"While no words can adequately express our deep sorrow at losing our leader, the Foundation’s team is profoundly grateful for having had the opportunity to know, work with, and learn from Micheál. Having worked in the Not-For-Profit sector in Ireland for over 25 years, Micheál was always passionate about the role that charities play in improving the lives of people across the island of Ireland.

"He has had a huge impact across all of the many organisations and projects he was involved in, and leaves behind a tremendous legacy of positivity and change.

"In January this year, we were privileged to have Micheál return to the Foundation as CEO, and in the short time we had him back, he continued to focus on delivering real, impactful, and positive changes for patients at ‘The Mercy'," the statement said.

Micheál originally joined the Foundation in 2007 as its first employee, and saw the Foundation grow to become one of the leading hospital foundations in the country.

In 2021 Micheál left the Foundation to become CEO of Irish Community Air Ambulance, where he spent three years.

 "May Micheál Rest In Peace".

Tributes have poured in for the late Mr Sheridan from around the country.

Marc Sheehan, Principal Scoil Niocláis Frankfield & former Chairman Cork County G.A.A. Board, wrote on RIP.ie: "I wish to offer my sincere condolences to Claire and your sons and the extended family at this sad time. I encountered Micheál through the Mercy Foundation as part of a joint initiative with Rebel Óg (Cork underage G.A.A.) in 2013/14. He was an innovator and the consummate professional. Greatly saddened to read of his passing. Suaimhneas síoraí dó".

"My sincerest sympathy to the entire Sheridan family. Michaél's contribution to the health and wellbeing of so many patients (through the Mercy Hospital Foundation) cannot be measured. He gave it all and even in the face of his own illness kept going. May he rest in peace," wrote Carl Vaughan.

"My deepest sympathies to Mícheál’s family. It was a real pleasure to spend time with Michéal and witness the passion and commitment he had for his family and his work. So many people have received so much, due to his work at the Mercy. May he rest in peace," wrote Dermot Hargaden.
