John Kelly broke the Ulster indoor shot put record on Saturday.

The Finn Valley AC man opened his season with a whopping 19.39m throw.

Kelly was competing in Växjö, Sweden.

The 26-year-old returned to action in excellent fashion last year after almost 18 months of inactivity due to a foot injury.

Also at the weekend, Eric Favors of Raheny Shamrock has broken his own Irish indoor shot put record with a superb 19.99m throw to finish fourth at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa

In 2022, Kelly held the Irish outdoor record for a period after throwing 20.16m in Cork.

That performance helped get the St Johnston man to the World Athletics Championships.

Kelly threw a best of 17.92m in Oregon and he set a new Championship record of 19.25m in winning the Irish senior shot put crown in Santry.

Kelly is based in Sweden, where he is coached by Vésteinn Hafsteinsson and competes with an elite group in Växjö that also includes Swedish discus thrower Daniel Ståhl, a 2019 World Championship gold medallist in Doha.
