There was joy for some Donegal athletes at the National Spring Throws Championships in Tullamore on Sunday.

Caoimhe Gallen of Lifford-Strabane AC won the under-17 girls hammer throw in the 3kgs category.

Gallen's best effort of 53.41m secured the top spot and she was well clear of closest rival, Aida Zukauskaite of Lagan Valley who threw out to 42.75m.

With the 4kg hammer, Adrienne Gallen was second. Gallen hit 52.99m with her opening throw and that mark was beaten by a PB from Rachel Akers of Ennis, who went to 53.68m.

Ellie McCurdy of Lifford-Strabane AC took bronze with the 600kgs javelin, reaching to a best of 37.02m. McCurdy hit 37.02 on her fourth throw.

McCurdy's clubmate Luke Ward won with the 1.5kgs discus thanks to a new PB of 32.53. His nearest challenger, Eoghan O'Brien made 26.36m.

Ward hit 28.06m with the 700kg javelin and also competed in the 5kg hammer, firing out to 32.05m.
