Kelly McGrory finished second in the women's 400m hurdles at the European Games in Poland on Wednesday morning.

The Tir Chonaill AC athlete finished in 58.08 seconds at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzow.

McGrory was second behind the winner, Lena Pressler from Austria, who clocked 57.02 to win. In third was Noah Levy from Israel in 58.72 seconds.

McGrory was operating out of lane six in the race and is also set to race in the 4x400m relay.

In May, the Laghey woman set a new Donegal 400m record. At the Mary Peters Track, McGrory clocked 54.21 seconds.

Last July, McGrory first broke the Donegal 400m record when claiming Christine Lynch’s mark that stood for 39 years. Then, at the Morton Games, McGrory went 54.68 seconds, to erase Lynch’s 55.72 seconds from the top of the record book.

While Athletics has featured on the European Games programme since 2015, this is the first time that it holds European Championship status, with it doubling up as the European Team Championships.

Ireland are competing in Division Three and the main aim is promotion into Division Two.

Finn Valley AC high jumper Sommer Lecky will be in action on Thursday.

Lecky, a Commonwealth Youth gold and European Under-20 silver medallist, is back in action after a period out with an injury.
