Jason Quigley took to the stage at Madison Square Garden on Thursday and was asked about the experience of coming into the lion's den.

The Ballybofey man shrugged the shoulders.

Edgar Berlanga will be on home soil when the pair collide in the Hulu Theatre at MSG. The Brooklyn boy, of Puerto Rican descent, is unbeaten in his 20 pro bouts, with 16 of his wins coming inside the scheduled distance.

Out of the ring for a year now, Berlanga has not fought since being suspended for six months and fined $10,000 for trying to bite opponent Roamer Alexis Angulo, also at the Garden.

Home turf for Berlanga, but Quigley has been here before.

“I back myself all the way,” Quigely said. “I have been going into the lion's den all my career; going to Kazakhstan, Russia, fighting in arenas with no English being spoken. I have come through hostile environments before.

“That's nothing to be worried about.”

As a decorated amateur in the Irish vest, Quigley was well travelled, but in many instances the passport wasn't exactly scanned at a tourist hotspot.

Ten years ago this month, he won European Elite gold in Minsk, having previously bagged Under-23 and Youth golds in Kaliningrad and Szczecin.

There were international gold medals in places like Kaunas (Lithuania), Ashdod (Israel), Ústí nad Labem (Czech Republic) and Berck-sur-Mer (France).

While he shone in Las Vegas in 2021 when beating Shane Mosley Jr for the NABO middleweight title, he won and retained the NABF middleweight belt at Fantasy Springs in Indo – a desert resort 250 miles from Las Vegas and 120 miles from Los Angeles.

Quigley went to Manchester in New Hampshire in November, 2021 to face the feared and avoided Demetrius Andrade for the WBO world middleweight title.

Berlanga has been brash this week, but Quigley has remained unmoved. In his first fight under Matchroom, Berlanga – the self-styled 'Chosen One' – needs to impress.

“We're just looking for fireworks, man,” Berlanga said. At one point, he even strayed into respect when he mentioned that Quigley - who has coach Andy Lee across the Atlantic in a major boost - will 'make it a difficult fight'.

“For me there is bigger fish out there,” he said, normality restored. “We've got business to handle. There is GGG (Gennady Golovkin), (Jermell) Charlo, these are the guys I wanna get in with. Now, I gota beat the shit outta Jason Quigley.”

Across the stage, Quigley - who will attempt to win Berlanga's super-middleweight title - stared ahead.

“I am here to progress my career and my life,” he said. “That is what I have to do. I have so much belief in myself and my team and I know the opportunities that can come from this fight.”
