Kelly McGrory and Irish 4x400m relay eighth in the world

Kelly McGrory and the Ireland 4x400m relay team finished eighth in the final at the World Athletics Championships.

Tir Chonaill AC’s McGrory, appearing on the world stage for the first time, helped the Irish quarter to clock 3:27.08.

McGrory ran the third leg with Sophie Becker, Roisin Harrison and Sharlene Mawdsley also in action.

Netherlands snatched gold in 3:20.72 thanks to a stunning anchor from Femke Bol, the Dutch taking top spot from Jamaica (3:20.88) and Great Britain (3:21:04).

Shy the services of Rhasidat Adeleke, fourth in Wednesday’s 400m final, and of Phil Healy, who opted not to travel to Budapest, the Irish team defied the odds to reach the final.

In Saturday’s semi-final, they ran 3:26.18, just 0.12 outside of the national record.

Adeleke - who was fourth in Wednesday’s 400m final in Budapest - withdrew from the relay squad. Athletics Ireland’s High Performance Director Paul McNamara said there would be a ‘risk of injury’ if the 20-year-old Tallaght woman raced again.
