Finn Valley AC’s Odhran McBrearty has been selected for the Ireland U17 squad for this weekend’s Celtic Cross Country Championships.

The event takes place in Renfrew on Saturday and McBrearty, who hails from Drumkeen, has been chosen by the Athletics Ireland juvenile committee.

The St Columba’s College, Stranorlar man had a superb 2023 and will look to take that form to Scotland where he competes on Saturday.

McBrearty is joined on the Ireland Celtic U17 team by Craughwell’s Declan O’Connell, Daire Mathews from Dunleeer and Lucan Harriers’ Jacob Ciomek.

McBrearty bagged silver in the National U16 cross country race. Only O’Connell was ahead of him with McBrearty digging deep to edge Mathews for the silver medal.

That medal helped secure McBrearty’s place on this week’s squad.l He also took an individual medal in the National U17 race, going eighth and also leading Finn Valley to a team bronze. Donegal to inter-county bronze and Ulster to inter-provincial gold.

McBrearty was the Ulster U16 gold medalist in 2023, staving off Noah Harper of Lagan Valley to take victory.

Finn Valley AC duo Mark Connolly and Tom Thompson are part of the Irish management team for this weekend’s trip.
