There was a family rivalry at the weekend as Glenties man Michael Boyle finished ahead of his father Declan Boyle in the battle for fifth at the Birr Stages Rally.

The younger Boyle was just 0.06 seconds ahead of his father in the race which saw Monaghan man Josh Moffett and co-driver Keith Moriarty seal a narrow victory.

There was less than a fifth of a second between first and second, as Sam Moffett and James O’Reilly just couldn’t close the gap to claim victory.

David Kelly and Arthur Kierans made up the rest of the top 3 in their VW Polo.

Elsewhere, Rathmullan man Kevin Gallagher won the modified section along with Ryan Moore in their Darrian T90.

This comes just two weeks after Gallagher came second in the modified section of the Monaghan rally just 1.8 seconds behind the winners Daniel McKenna and Andrew Grennan.
