Mark English's graph for 2024 continues to go upwards as the Finn Valley AC recorded victory in Spain on Wednesday night.

English won the 800m at the IX Memorial José Antonio Cansino meeting in Castellón.

English crossed the line in 1:45.85, a new season's best, to win.

Out of lane six, the Letterkenny native took victory ahead of Spanish duo Jose Ignacio Perez (1:46.31) and Ronaldo Olivo (1:46.53) with Qatar's Abdirahman Saeed Hassan fourth.

With the European Championships and Olympic Games coming sharp on the horizon, English dipped under 1:46 for the first time this season.

It was here, at the Gaetà Huguet Athletics Track, where English had set his Irish record of 1:44.71 in 2021 to seal his place at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

In Spain on Friday, English was fourth in 1:45.29 at the Meeting Jaen Paraiso Interior held in Andujar.

That improved on the 1:46.47 he clocked at the Yangtze Delta Athletics Diamond Gala in the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre in China.

English had opened his outdoor season, also in China, when going 1:47.14.
