Letterkenny AC had men’s and women’s teams competing at the opening round of the National Indoor League on Sunday.

The LAC men are placed fifth and the women 10th with the second round slated for February 8. Due to a rescheduling, there will be no final this year with points totted between both rounds to determine final placings.

Ryan Canning won his 400m on Sunday at the National Indoor Arena in 51.80 seconds.

There was a second-place finish for Sheldon Romeo Nyoni, who clocked 7.28 seconds in a 60m sprint.

Canning and Nyoni teamed up with Danny McKinley and Joseph Aidoo for second in a 4x200m, the black and amber quartet finishing in 1:33.43.

In the long jump, Nyoni placed sixth, going out to 5.77m while Aidoo finished seventh in the high jump when clearing 1.65m with Elvis Okoh reaching out to 8.32m for 12th in the shot.

Dale Corbett was eighth over 1500m (4:41.52) and Danny Sharkey ninth in the 1500m walk (10:39.91).

In the women’s competitions, Erin Friel - who competed with the Irish medley relay team at the European U18s last summer - won her 400m in 58.35 seconds. Overall, she was the third fastest over the distance with Aisling Stratford from Ratoath AC going 56.94 and Craughwell’s Sinead Treacy stopping her clock at 58.34, just 0.01 seconds quicker than Friel.

The LAC 4x200m team won their heat in 1:48.71 with Friel running the second leg. Katie Elliot, Kathryn McDevitt and Fern Duffy were also included.
